How did it begin?

Welcome to my blog!

Over the coming weeks and months, you can follow along and engage with me as I seek to redefine the storytelling of history. History isn’t just for bespectacled, tweed jacket-wearing individuals. You don’t always need to spend hours reading, or years researching, to cultivate a deep historical perspective.  Sometimes you just need to find a good storyteller!  And with podcasting, we finally have a platform for this.

Here was the problem I wanted to solve: I love history and I love podcasts, but I didn’t love any existing history podcasts.

I listen to podcasts while I drive, while I exercise, while I cook… whenever I can.  But I searched and searched and never seemed to find a history podcast that pushed all my buttons.  I definitely found some wonderful shows, including Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History, The Stuff You Missed In History Class, and Revisionist History by Malcolm Gladwell. Instead of getting hooked on the content, though, I always found myself daydreaming about what I might do differently.

Some shows, for me at least, were too long and exhausted my attention, some seemed too esoteric and I just couldn’t connect with the subject matter, and some reminded me too much of being trapped in a high school history lecture. One of my old graduate student colleagues even commented once that it seemed like podcast options boiled down to either history for experts or history for dummies. I wouldn’t go that far, but it certainly seemed like there wasn’t a lot of middle ground being explored; content that would appeal to both experts and the general public alike, children and seniors and people of every age in between.

How It Began is a history podcast that has been designed from the ground up to be as entertaining as it is educational so that it ignites interest in history in as many people as possible.  I’ve been working nonstop since August 2016 to make each show of Season One uniquely compelling, with its own personality.  By early spring 2017, I will be releasing the first episodes, initiating what will hopefully become an exciting new era in history podcasting.

This blog, all the way up until launch and after, will be rich with insider information: teaser clips, hints into what the first season will consist of, and other exclusive information on How It Began, unavailable anywhere else.

Welcome to How It Began, I’ll see you again in a few days!
